Philippine Homeschool Conference 2015: Ready for the World!

This October 17, Homeschool Association of the Philippine Islands (HAPI), Manila Workshops and The Learning Basket bring you the largest homeschooling conference this year- "The Philippine Homeschool Conference 2015: Ready for the World!"

As a precursor to the "Global Home Education Conference" (GHEC) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in March 2016, two well-respected homeschool advocates and speakers from the United States will be gracing the event as keynote speakers: Michael Donelly, Director for the Global Outreach of the Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) and Secretary of GHEC 2016, and Rachael Carman, mother of seven and best-selling author and publisher of popular homeschool science curriculum Apologia. Rachael's husband, Davis, the President of Apologia, will be speaking as well.

Sought-after speaker and homeschooling advocate Edric Mendoza, host of On Th Money and homeschooling dad of five will also be speaking. Chinkee Tan, motivational speaker and wealth coach, will be speaking as well.

Homeschoolers and those exploring this educational option will be inspired, informed and empowered in this biggest homeschooling event. Definitely bigger than the past years' homeschool conferences, "Ready for the World!" will be held at THREE venues at SM Aura Premiere. NATIONAL KIDS’ INNOVATION DAY Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the National Kids’ Innovation Day or NKID?

A: The National Kids’ Innovation Day is an occasion led by Wyeth Nutrition that promotes the importance of nurturing the value of innovation in children. It represents the advocacy of the company to help propel the spirit of innovativeness and drive meaningful innovations toward nurturing healthier generations.

2. What is Wyeth Nutrition’s vision for NKID?

A: Our vision is to celebrate the spirit of innovativeness in children and drive innovations in the country through the NKID, supported by the Filipino citizenry.

3. What is the Search for the Wyeth Nutrition Kid Innovators?

A: The nationwide Search for the Wyeth Nutrition Kid Innovators is an advocacy that aims to recognize outstanding kid innovators and their achievements, and celebrate their exciting journey to innovation, to encourage and inspire more children to unleash the power of their curiosity.

4. Who can participate in the Search?

A: The search is open to all students aged 9 to 14, grades 4 to 8, who may participate alone or in groups of two to five (2-5) members.

5. How can I submit my project as an entry to the search?

 A: Participant/s shall submit a written brief and a simple video presentation of an innovative science-related project that they produced as an academic requirement or personal initiative, duly endorsed by the Science Department Head of the school. Submission shall be made via email to wyethnutritionkidinnovators@gmail.com on or before April 1, 2016.

The video, with a maximum length of three minutes, shall provide a demonstration of the invention, while the written brief shall contain the following information:

• Who is/are the participant/s and the adviser?
• What is the invention called?
• What is its purpose and use/s?
• Who can benefit from the invention and how?
• What inspired you to create the invention?
• How was it developed (process)?

 What kind of science projects can I submit?

A: Participant/s may submit any innovative science-related project.

7. How will the entries be judged?

A: Entries will be judged based on Innovativeness and Functionality (40%), Resourcefulness and Creativity (30%), Social Relevance (20%) and Overall Presentation (10%).

8. Can I submit science projects from previous years?

A: The project must have been undertaken within the period of three years preceding the submission of entry.

9. Can we submit more than one project?

A: Because we want to give equal opportunity to all students/schools who will participate in the Search, only one (1) entry per participant or group is allowed.

10. There are 7 of us in a group. Can we participate in the Search?

A: Entries may be submitted individually or in groups of two to five (2-5) members.

11. Can I belong to more than one group?

A: To give equal chance to all participants, a participant may only be part of one (1) group during the competition.

12. What prizes can we win?

A: Winning teams will each receive a cash prize of One Hundred Thousand Pesos (P100,000.00) and trophy. The schools of each winning team will also receive a Science & Technology Showcase worth One Hundred Thousand Pesos (P100,000.00).

 When is the deadline for submissions?

A: Students who wish to participate may submit their entries on or before April 1, 2016.

14. When will the winners of the Search be announced?

A: After careful deliberation, the top three (3) submissions/winners will be notified by a Wyeth Nutrition representative via electronic and direct mail. All winners will be formally recognized and awarded during the National Kids’ Innovation Day 2016.

15. Is the Search for Wyeth Nutrition Kid Innovators a yearly activity?

A: Wyeth envisions the National Kids’ Innovation Day to become an official observance of innovation in children. Accordingly, the Search for Wyeth Nutrition Kid Innovators, which is a highlight of NKID in inspiring innovation among children, will also be an annual activity.

Wyeth Nutrition launched a nationwide search for “kid innovators” during its National Kids’ Innovation Day, an occasion held at The Mind Museum in Taguig City marking the company’s advocacy to nurture the spirit of innovation among Filipino children.

“Sparking the spirit of innovation among our young generation can help propel our pursuit toward better lives for Filipino families,” Wyeth Nutrition President and General Manager Joseph Eugene David said.

Aiming to spark curiosity in children and nurture their love for science and passion for innovation, the search invites students aged 9 to 14, grades 4 to 8, to submit an innovative science-related project that they produced, either alone or as a group of 2-5 members, in compliance with an academic requirement or as a personal initiative.

Manila Science High School alumni Aliana Mae Arales and Jejomar Derecho recalled how they came up with the Tri-Axis Accelerometer as Commercial Seismic Wave Sensor, bagging the gold in the 2014 International Youth Invention Exhibition Awards.

Justine Silvestre and Adrian dela Cruz of the Philippine Science High School shared how they overcame challenges to their science project, the “Oxygen Plasma Surface Modification of Polylactic Acid-Cellulose Acetate-Chitosan Nanocomposite Fiber,” which won the Best Overseas Project at the Mahidol Wittayanusorn School Science Fair in Thailand this year.

The group of Jeanne Alexis Marasigan, Whinley Hasset Uy, Mari Christine Amon, Leira Mae Socito and Alexis Andrea Tamayo from Manila Science High School reminisced how they invented the Light Intensity Meter-Operated Automatic Gas Tank Valve Lock, which won the gold in the 2014 International Youth Invention Exhibition Awards in Taiwan.

Fourteen-year-old Amin Hataman shared how he was able to invent biodegradable plastics made of coconuts last year, winning gold in the 2014 International Young Inventors Olympiad in Georgia, and bronze in the 2015 I-SWEEP Olympiad in Texas, USA.

The top three winning entries of the Search for the Wyeth Nutrition Kid Innovators shall each receive a cash prize of One Hundred Thousand Pesos (PhP100,000) and a trophy, along with a science-and-technology showcase worth One Hundred Thousand Pesos (PhP100,000) for the partner school.
