MBF: Ranch, Garlic Ranch

I'm craving for some romaine lettuce lately and it's so nice to know that it's only Php100 per kilo (around 3-4 bugkos) in Tagaytay. Aside from this greek salad, my cousin taught me some Korean cooking (more like eating). You cook some chicken bulgogi and you add some homemade garlic ranch and some Batangas made chicharon called luglug (if I'm not mistaken).
Psst, ang goat cheese bawal daw sa buntis! Mag-cheddar na lang! Char.
Recipe for garlic ranch here.

Meeting Mark Zuckerberg and My Facebook Friends Day Experience

Last January 31, 2016, Fellow Filipino Abby Asistio flew to San Francisco and had the wonderful opportunity of being chosen as one of the eighteen invited by Facebook on their 12th Anniversary Friends Day celebration with California-based Alopecia awareness advocate, Rachel Regal.  Alopecia is an autoimmune condition which results in partial or total head and body hair loss.  Abby Asistio have had it since she was four while Rachel just developed it sometime in 2012, the same year she discovered that her 10-year-old daughter, Eliana, had it, too.  Six inspiring stories were picked by Facebook among its 1.64 billion users and Abby’s friends were all amazed when they’ve found out that Abby’s Alopecia story was one of them.  Imagine that!

Abby and Rachel met each other through the double A hand sign campaign that Aby started in 2012, and They've been "connected" since then.  Last year, Facebook Stories featured how these two were able to build a friendship, as well as campaign for disease awareness through Facebook!  And last February 1st, Abby and Rachel had the chance to tour FB headquarters in Menlo Park, San Francisco, meet and chat with the people behind Facebook (Founder & CEO Mark Zuckerberg, COO Sheryl Sandberg, CPO Chris Cox, and a whole lot of awesome people), get crazy cool gadgets and have one of the best experiences of their lives.

Abby recounted that it was such a surreal feeling to be in the same room as the creator of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg. Mark Z was wearing his trademark look (jeans, sneakers, shirt and a big smile on his face), and had such a friendly, approachable aura and demeanor about him.  Not at all intimidating!  He shared stories about how the company started, its mission-vision, the ups and downs that come along, and their future plans.  Those invited also had the chance to ask him questions. When Mark Z was asked about achieving success and life’s “impossibilities”.  He said, “There’s a difference between impossible and things taking a really long time. Even if you’re not going to be able to do something in a short time period, if you care about something, you want to see the world to move into that direction… So the best thing to do is just get started and not be discouraged.  It’s tough because this stuff is hard, or else people would’ve already done it.”

Abby Asistio got the chance to ask a question to one of the world’s 50 most powerful, successful women in business, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg.  Aside from Alopecia awareness, Abby is also an active Real Beauty advocate with girls and women struggling with various insecurities, being so consumed by the world’s unrealistic and sometimes superficial standards of beauty. So Abby asked Sheryl about her perception of it. Sheryl said that beauty is just like success and that no one could really define it for you.  We are all unique.  We have different stories, dreams and desires. We should explore our own inner and outer beauty, believe and embrace that we are beautiful, and never allow anyone to tell us otherwise.

Mark capped off his talk by sharing their company philosophy with everyone present. Though already having over 1 billion subscribers, there are still 7 billion people all over the world without access to all the meaningful connections and information that Facebook brings. One thing that the company stands by is that “things are always 1% completed”. It keeps them grounded, reminding them that there is always so much work, growth and progress to be done, and so many people to reach out to and help.

Everything about the Facebook trip was overwhelming and inspiring according to Abby.  More than anything, it reminded her about “responsibility”.  We are all given our own platforms, in this case “accounts and connections”, to make a dent in this world. It is up to us to become complacent and take these vehicles for granted, or maximize the opportunities and use them to make a positive impact in this generation. Abby is grateful that Facebook has become a medium for her to communicate disease awareness and touch people beyond the confines of her tiny room and her country. Abby is also glad that she and Rachel are two out of millions of people choosing to recognize the importance of social media in contributing to making this world a better place, and actually doing something about it.

Truly, God plans the best adventures and creates the most beautiful surprises.  Abby knows that she wouldn't have been handpicked for this if it weren't for Him, as well as the countless individuals who have cared and showed support for my advocacy.Abby would like to leave a positive thought to everyone that we should really take the time to search for and identify our “purpose” – that one unique, very specific calling that is the result of our talents, dreams, desires, passions and experiences.  Once you find it, be faithful to it no matter how long or difficult the journey towards its fulfillment may be. You’ll never know where it could lead to, how far it could go and how large it could grow. Abby is also thankful that her campaign continues to spread and reach new heights and she is particularly grateful to Facebook for giving her this opportunity and to Novuhair,Nature's Answer to Hair Loss (www.novuhair.com), for always being so supportive of her advocacy and endeavors. Abby is proud and honored to have represented the Philippines and the Alopecia community in this once-in-a-lifetime, international event.

Beat the Heat by Avoiding These Summer Skincare Mistakes

This coming summer is looking to be a hot one, which means many of us will likely head to the beach to cool off. If you're not careful, however, you could get more than just sand, sea, and sun. Protect your skin against the sweltering heat this summer by being prepared and informed. Start by getting to know and avoiding these all too common summer skincare mistakes. Neglecting Proper Sunscreen Use Sunscreen should be an important part of your summer skincare routine, but many of us do away with it for various reasons. For some, it's expensive, it doesn't feel good on the skin, or it's not practical if you're not planning to stay under the sun for a long time. First off, not all sunblock lotions are expensive. These may be a bit pricier compared to ordinary lotions, but the purchase is worth it. Many sunscreens on the market are also formulated for quick skin absorption, which does away with the sticky residual feeling. Dermplus sunblocks, for example, provide excellent skin protection from the sun, features a quick absorb formula, and comes in different variants and sizes depending on your need and skin type. One important thing many people don't know is that you can get sunburn even when indoors. UV light can penetrate through glass windows, which means even if you are at home or in the office and you happen to be next to a window, you still are exposed. Make it a habit to use Dermplus to all exposed areas of the body every day, especially this summer. Ignoring Dead Skin Cells The sun and sand may feel good on your feet, but these can damage the skin. Be sure to exfoliate your skin before hitting the beach. Removing the dead skin cells allow for the growth of new, healthy cells, which makes the skin smoother and feeling softer. Exfoliation also allows the sunblock and other skincare products to be more effective, as it can go deeper into the skin. Relying on Clothes Alone for Sun Protection Our summer outfits are often light, airy, and colorful. This, however, could mean your skin (even the non-exposed parts) does not get enough protection. The sando, the sun dress, or that light summery polo shirt provide very little protection against the sun. For this, it's best to sunscreen it up all over, and maybe even getting clothes with built-in sun protection. Getting Dehydrated Dehydration not only causes headaches and extreme thirst, it also causes the skin to dry out. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water or non-sugary, non-caffeinated beverages. This balances the body and skin's moisture levels. Ignoring that Sunburn If you really can't stay away from the heat and the sun for a long time, be sure to soothe the skin as soon as possible. The Dermplus Aftersun Hydrating Body Gel is very effective in soothing the skin, reducing inflammation and redness, and preventing peeling. The sooner you deal with the sun damage on the skin, the better. Make this summer fun and safe not just for the family or the barkada, but for your skin as well.

CDC Holdings Completes Manila Rivercity Residences

CDC Holdings, Inc., one of the leading real estate developers in the country, recently completed the construction and turnover of units for its newest project – the Manila Rivercity Residences in Sta. Ana, Manila.
With all the property’s nine towers now completed, the company has fulfilled its commitment to help more families realize their dream of living in their own homes. Through the Manila Rivercity Residences, nestled along the historic and scenic Pasig River, CDC Holdings has once again built one of the most exciting and dynamic communities in the area.
“From an old, dilapidated warehouse, CDC Holdings transformed this site into one of the most attractive real estate investment you can find at this location, at this price and at this quality,” shared Elsie Chua, the company’s president and CEO. “The vision that I have of providing value for money homes at convenient location is a reality with Manila Rivercity Residences.”
The event was also highlighted with the turnover of the keys to homeowners signaling the community’s involvement in ensuring that the quality will be properly managed and maintained. “The challenge now is how to preserve and even enhance the units and amenities that have been turned over to the residents. CDC built the buildings, but it is up to each and every one of the homeowners to create a sense of community,” she added.
Offering a relaxing retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle, the property is comprised of nine medium-rise buildings, named after the world’s most famous rivers: Nile, Dnieper, Blue Danube, Colorado, Euphrates, Rhine, Amazon, Kumagawa and Yangtze. Amid the urban chaos, the Manila Rivercity Residences serves as a sanctuary for families through its spacious studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units.
Chua says the success of this latest project validates CDC Holdings’ formula of providing quality homes at affordable prices at convenient location. Manila Rivercity Residences is ideally accessible, making a comfortable commute to or from the neighboring districts of Manila, Makati City or Mandaluyong City. What’s more, various commercial establishments, renowned schools and reputable medical facilities are within easy reach from CDC’s riverside condominium community.
Inside the gated community of Manila Rivercity Residences, residents will feel like they have been transported to a different world – one that spells relaxation and tranquility. Families can bond together and enjoy the property’s host of recreational facilities.
Residents can spend some rest and recreation time at the landscaped boardwalk facing the Pasig River. Built with viewing decks that are made of eco-friendly material, gazebos and play areas, it is the perfect spot to unwind during the weekends. Families can also host barbeque and pool parties, as the Manila Rivercity Residences offers a well-appointed pool area with two fountains and falls, as well as barbeque pits. Residents can also wander freely and safely even in the evenings, as CDC is in the process of putting LED lights on common areas.
For CDC Holdings, its dedication to make its residents feel at home in every community that it builds is an ongoing commitment. As a result, the company is in the process of adding more features in the Manila Rivercity Residences, such as the installation of CCTV in the roof deck, elevators and main lobbies of all buildings, as well as the future implementation of garbage segregation. CDC Holdings will also launch soon the Kids Club, wherein resident kids can register to receive exclusive perks during their birthdays, participate in monthly activities such as Summer Carnival and craft sessions, and claim other exciting giveaways.
Among the residents who feel at home with CDC Holding’s property is 30-year old Kathleen Cruz, a branch head of a large retail store. Cruz, with her husband and four-year old daughter, are among the first occupants of the Manila Rivercity Residences when they bought a one-bedroom unit in the project’s Nile Tower. After making it their happy home for five years, they decided to purchase another unit in the same community – this time a two-bedroom in Yangtze Tower.
Accessibility and value for money were their main consideration for making Manila Rivercity Residences their home, according to Cruz. “We have seen a lot of developments in our line of work, and we can say that what CDC offered us is very competitive in terms of price,” Cruz says. What Cruz loves most about living in the Manila Rivercity Residences is the feeling of haven it gives to her family. “After a hard day at work, you just want to come home to a place that will be like your sanctuary, a place that will make you really feel at home,” Cruz shares. “It really feels like a community, and CDC is taking efforts to make us feel at home, even down to the little details.”
Just like the Cruz family, the Manila Rivercity Residences offers homeowners a smart way of living, with its excellent location, move-in ready units, and superb features and amenities. Engineering for Kids: SMILE SUMMER CAMPS

SMILE Group, in its commitment to delivering STEM-based explorations and investigations, came up with a delightful way of how natural engineers can spike up their summer! Camps offered by the SMILE Group, Engineering for Kids, and `Challenge Island cater to different kinds of learners with different passions and interests while developing the 4 C’s of STEM: Collaboration, Creativity, Communication, and Critical Thinking.
Why STEM? We define STEM education as the preparation of children in competencies and skills that build upon each other and can be used with real-world applications. STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and enables the next generation of innovators.
Each camp has a series of investigations, which are based on lessons planned with the 5 E’s of Learning in mind: Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Extension, and Evaluation. The camps still put priority on the opportunities for the learners to explore and investigate, which in turn would enhance and enrich not just what they are learning but how they learn about concepts, skills, and values.
Every camp has a story the weaves each investigation with each other to achieve a goal for their team. Collaboration is emphasized as the learners tackle one challenge after another to complete their mission or objective. Creative planning is needed for the teams to implement their designs and to emerge as successful engineers in each camp.
A SMILE Camp is a sure way to let your kids have fun while learning this summer!
Benefits for Toddlers:
From the article Surprise! It’s STEM for Toddlers! By Lisa G. Kropp in School Library Journal (http://www.slj.com/2015/07/feature-articles/surprise-its-stem-for-toddlers/#_)
Research confirms that the brain is particularly receptive to learning math and logic between the ages of one and four… “Early exposure to STEM—whether it be in school, at a museum, library, or just engaging in the natural trial and error of play—supports children’s overall academic growth, develops early critical thinking and reasoning skills, and enhances later interest in STEM study and careers.” - J.D. Chesloff of Massachusetts Governor’s STEM Advisory Council’s Executive Committee
“They are learning about geometry when they play with blocks. They are learning about measurement/volume when they fill and dump out containers. They are learning about patterns when they sing songs or listen to cumulative stories. When playing with puzzles, they learn about shapes and one-to-one correspondence.” - Rachel PayneBrooklyn Public Library’s coordinator of early childhood services
Benefits for School-Age Children:
STEM Education aims to develop the curious minds of natural scientists inside each child and develop his or her maximum potential and eventually make a mark on this world by being brave and competent when it comes to solving problems and helping others.
STEM Education aims to develop the 4 C’s, which are: Creativity and Innovation, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Collaboration, and Communication.
These skills are developed through explorations and investigations that require children not just to be hands-on with whatever they do, but also to be minds-on.
With STEM Education, students are engaged in what they do. They are given time and opportunities to explore and explain. They also gain exposure and extension into real life and real world situations and applications. They also get to evaluate their experience by learning about the Engineering Design Process.
It is not necessary for one to be an engineer to be able to follow the engineering design process. It is something that is applicable in any profession and in any situation. We do solve problems by asking questions, brainstorming, designing or planning, building and testing our designs or plans, and improving whatever it is that could be helpful in our lives. And we go on repeating whichever part is necessary if we want to strive for excellence and innovation.
With these in mind, SMILE Group puts priority on the explorations, investigations, and processes that the students experience in each session. We are not solely focused on the content and the materials that are being used for each activity, although we recognize their importance, too. We want to bring out the ingenuity in them through motivation, engagement, and fun.
SMILE Toddler Program
For ages 1.6-4yrs old
SMILE’s Toddler Program aims to promote holistic development of young learners through a STEAM-based curriculum. Developmentally appropriate explorations and investigations will be facilitated by the teachers through different interactive experiences such as storytelling and play.
 AROUND THE WORLD
This program puts together different modes of transportation and structures related to transportation. Young learners will build different vehicles to transport them to different locations. They will also need different structures or devices to survive in these locations.
 MAKING SENSES
Young learners will have experiences focused on the use and care for their different senses. They will participate in building and investigating mechanical toys, musical instruments, as well as exploring different substances to create other materials or solutions. For the culmination of this program, they will have an exploration that will require the use of all their five senses.
 YOGALPHABETS
This program introduces young learners to the letters of the alphabet through stories, yoga poses, and STEAM-based explorations and investigations. Each session starts with an engaging activity such as warm-up exercises or games, followed by a story, which will be processed afterwards. Young learners will then proceed to guided yoga poses followed by an investigation or exploration related to the story or alphabet of the day.
STEM LITERATURE
This program will use different STEM-based literature for children as the springboard and main source of explorations. These stories have been enhanced through imploring the STEM Methodology and include STEM concepts that are incorporated in the story lines. An example would be the classic story of The Three Little Pigs, which has been infused with civil engineering in a fun and engaging way!
SMILE Camps
PROJECT RUNWAY (The Engineering of Fashion) 4-14yrs old
As you know in fashion, you’re either in or you’re out. Young fashion engineers will get the chance to create their own fashion line. They will build their own models using utility dough. They will dress it up with accessories and clothes made out of household materials, as well as natural materials. Planning for production and quality control will be very critical to these fashion engineers. A runway has to built for each team, too! And finally, fashion engineers get to celebrate the success of their fashion show with poppers during the curtain call!
SWEETS FOR MY SWEETS (The Engineering of Food) 4-14yrs old
This camp caters to those who have sweet tooth and more! Young engineers will be involved in all steps of getting food from a farm to your table. They will help figure out how to make cookies, how to package them, and how to deliver these goodies to the bakeries and for take home. During this camp, young engineers will form a team to work as a sweets company,  making tasty treats like as they compete against other teams. They will engineer the best solutions possible each day to beat their opponent companies to earn extra sweets for being the winning company of the day. At the end of the week, the best sweets company will be awarded the Engineering for Kids Baker’s Choice Award, and students will be able to take home the sweets they earned during the week.
Space Race (Smile Robotics) 7-14yrs old
Students will race against time in an unknown planet to complete their science missions before getting back home to Earth. As they finish their challenges they have to hurry to get back to their rocket before they lose energy from the Sun. They will have to collect the sensors scattered across the planet that are needed to locate their rocket. They will have to achieve their tasks in the limited time that their equipment will allow.
Challenge Island

Jollibee Trains Future ‘Mini Managers’ This Summer

Summer is about to get more exciting for Jolly Kiddie Club (JKC) members as the country’s favorite fast food chain launches the Jollibee Mini Managers Camp. The Mini Managers Camp is a fun and productive way for children to make the most out of summer and learn the value of work through fun and games. Camp session will start on April 4, Monday in 380 participating Jollibee stores nationwide.
The weeklong, fun-filled workshop aims to make JKC members embrace and apply values that will help them become better individuals in the future. Through various activities, camp participants are taught the importance of excellence, respect for individual, honesty and integrity, leadership and teamwork, and other core values that a Jollibee restaurant manager embodies.
The camp’s highlight is the Mini Managers’ hands-on and interactive role-play activity, where kids are exposed to Jollibee’s best store practices and are asked to carry out what they have learned as they are assigned to different food, service, and cleanliness stations in the store. The said activity helps kids apply the values learned since day one of the workshop. Each participant is given their own Jollibee Manager uniform that they can use during the exercise.
The workshop also includes a variety of creative art activities, storytelling, and other fun opportunities for kids to learn while meeting and bonding with new friends.
In line with the launch of the Jollibee Mini Managers Camp, Jollibee also premieres its web infomercial for the summer camp featuring JKC ambassador and TV personality Marco Masa, best known for his lead role in the TV show Nathaniel.
Registration for the Jollibee Mini Managers Camp runs from February to March nationwide, while the workshop proper is from April until May. The workshop is ideal for  JKC members age 4 to 7 years old. If your kids are not JKC members yet, just visit a Jollibee store to apply for a membership and register for the Mini Managers Camp. MBF: Gender Bias

When I was in college, my professor in Environmental Engineering told us to describe how engineering could impact the environment. First day of class and we were bombarded with circumstances that are important in failures not just of the structures, but due to itself, too. Actually, ngayon ko lang naisip na in designing, we can't really create something that will not fail. We just have to see the worst case scenario and do a backup plan: reversing/preventing/delaying the damage. Sabi ng prof ko, kailangan daw mas matibay ang concrete sa bakal, para kapag nag-earthquake, mauunang magfail ang steel bars, may chance pang mag evacuate before pa magkaroon ng massive falling of debris.
For a full 15 minutes, he let us wander in our thoughts - search through every deep nooks and crannies of our brain, figuring out the circumstances, important failures that have had far-reaching impacts not just on the civil engineering practice, but on the environment too. He choses a random essay who generally use the word "he" to describe humanity, and bias daw ang writer. May mga babae sa klase niya. (Tatlo kami.) At, sa bandang huli, right after reading the piece, nagulat siya na babae pala ang nagsulat - ako. Mag-eexplain sana ako eh, pero hindi na, I let it go. Buti na lang hindi niya binanggit name ko while reading my essay aloud.

Case in point? I prefer males, not just in gender but in general, maybe because I consider myself an opportunist? Yes, I think so, too. There used (still is) to be more privileges for the gentlemen and I, as a female in a sea of men, was a small victory. Men have breasts but not forced to wear bras. Nope, this is not a #freethenipples campaign nor I'm into it, too. But that's just one of the issues. (Or was I on the verge of becoming a feminist? Yes, I think so, too.) It's like, standing out there is to prove that men can do, women can do better. Engineering, pagha-hollow blocks, plumbing - even better. (...Until I have sons.) So now, I prefer, men can do, women can and will, too. Feminism wants gender equality, tapos kapag hindi tumayo si kuya sa bus para paupuin si ateng nakatayo, chivalry is dead, agad agad! Of course it is! It cannot logically coexist with gender equality. (See, sometimes, perspective change, you just need time. Having sons balanced my point of view in this matter.) Of course, I'm not there to compete. To be a woman and compete with men is a fallacy - at least that is what I believe. And to compete with other women (although this is a very different topic) is a waste of life force. Goodness! Moving on...
I'm just so happy that women are changing the game. *fistbump mga teh!
I mean, March as International Women's Month with shopping sales here and there, free makeover on the counter, free rides on the MRT Station (regardless whether the queue was too long) is a good step forward! I also like joining women's club who aim on helping out other women (not tearing them down - hello chismosa, kerida, inggitera!) Being part of online communities like ilovebdj.com is one of the ways to power up! In line with this, I would like to invite you to the first ever BDJ Women’s Summit!

Happening this April 16 at Samsung Hall, SM Aura! The theme of this event is Women Helping Women—an idea that's part of the vision of BDJ (Belle de Jour Power Planner) in empowering all Filipinas to make a change and make the impossible possible.
Join us in engaging discussions toward current relevant issues faced by women today! Save the date and prepare yourself to be inspired from advocates and change-makers who will uplift, motivate and spark action.#BDJWomensSummit #BDJat10
Now, I actually enjoy my womanhood - I look forward in indulging on my PMS cravings, I respect the menses - hands down. These saggy orbs from breastfeeding and my abdominal incision are looking badass, I love it! I will never have a daughter in this lifetime but I'm busy honing little gentlemen to becoming good individuals with deep respect towards women.

All Clean! with Fat Out!

Are you all clean? Clean on the inside and the outside? Since we’re kids we’re thought to always have a good hygiene. People always make sure to teach us how to take a bath, brush our teeth, brush our hair, and stay prim and presentable at all times. Hygiene is very important in our health, but what most people forget to teach is, being clean on the inside especially our colon is very important. Worry no more because FatOutcan help with that.

FatOutcan help make your digestive system more effective. When our colon is cleansed it pushes out undigested waste, clearing the way and helping you absorb good nutrients better. With a healthy colon your digestive system allows you to easily pass undigested waste through your system which can result to having lesser risk of other digestive problems and disorder and also help in weight loss.
FatOuthas the revolutionary Sweep and Shred Formula which helps in cleansing your colon and trimming down your fat. Psyllium Husk sweeps and cleanses toxins in your colon while Green Tea Extract shreds and burns your fat. FatOut eliminates hard-to-digest fats and helps detoxify the colon. It nourishes the digestive system that can help in proper bowel movement and digestion. The sweep and Shred formula can help you lose the pounds without putting your health at risk. Note that, FatOut is not a medicinal drug and is not used to treat the symptoms of any disease.
FatOut should be taken daily, before every meal, preferably with a warm glass of water. FatOut is available at all Mercury Drug stores and other leading drugstores nationwide for SRP P125.00 per capsule. Stand out with FatOut!
