Engineering for Kids: SMILE SUMMER CAMPS


SMILE Group, in its commitment to delivering STEM-based explorations and investigations, came up with a delightful way of how natural engineers can spike up their summer! Camps offered by the SMILE Group, Engineering for Kids, and `Challenge Island cater to different kinds of learners with different passions and interests while developing the 4 C’s of STEM: Collaboration, Creativity, Communication, and Critical Thinking.
Why STEM? We define STEM education as the preparation of children in competencies and skills that build upon each other and can be used with real-world applications. STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and enables the next generation of innovators.
Each camp has a series of investigations, which are based on lessons planned with the 5 E’s of Learning in mind: Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Extension, and Evaluation. The camps still put priority on the opportunities for the learners to explore and investigate, which in turn would enhance and enrich not just what they are learning but how they learn about concepts, skills, and values.
Every camp has a story the weaves each investigation with each other to achieve a goal for their team. Collaboration is emphasized as the learners tackle one challenge after another to complete their mission or objective. Creative planning is needed for the teams to implement their designs and to emerge as successful engineers in each camp.

Benefits for School-Age Children:
STEM Education aims to develop the curious minds of natural scientists inside each child and develop his or her maximum potential and eventually make a mark on this world by being brave and competent when it comes to solving problems and helping others.
STEM Education aims to develop the 4 C’s, which are: Creativity and Innovation, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Collaboration, and Communication.
These skills are developed through explorations and investigations that require children not just to be hands-on with whatever they do, but also to be minds-on.
 With STEM Education, students are engaged in what they do. They are given time and opportunities to explore and explain. They also gain exposure and extension into real life and real world situations and applications. They also get to evaluate their experience by learning about the Engineering Design Process.
It is not necessary for one to be an engineer to be able to follow the engineering design process. It is something that is applicable in any profession and in any situation. We do solve problems by asking questions, brainstorming, designing or planning, building and testing our designs or plans, and improving whatever it is that could be helpful in our lives. And we go on repeating whichever part is necessary if we want to strive for excellence and innovation.
 With these in mind, SMILE Group puts priority on the explorations, investigations, and processes that the students experience in each session. We are not solely focused on the content and the materials that are being used for each activity, although we recognize their importance, too. We want to bring out the ingenuity in them through motivation, engagement, and fun.
SMILE Toddler Program
For ages 1.6-4yrs old
SMILE’s Toddler Program aims to promote holistic development of young learners through a STEAM-based curriculum. Developmentally appropriate explorations and investigations will be facilitated by the teachers through different interactive experiences such as storytelling and play.
 AROUND THE WORLD
This program puts together different modes of transportation and structures related to transportation. Young learners will build different vehicles to transport them to different locations. They will also need different structures or devices to survive in these locations.
 MAKING SENSES
Young learners will have experiences focused on the use and care for their different senses. They will participate in building and investigating mechanical toys, musical instruments, as well as exploring different substances to create other materials or solutions. For the culmination of this program, they will have an exploration that will require the use of all their five senses.
 YOGALPHABETS
This program introduces young learners to the letters of the alphabet through stories, yoga poses, and STEAM-based explorations and investigations. Each session starts with an engaging activity such as warm-up exercises or games, followed by a story, which will be processed afterwards. Young learners will then proceed to guided yoga poses followed by an investigation or exploration related to the story or alphabet of the day.
STEM LITERATURE
This program will use different STEM-based literature for children as the springboard and main source of explorations. These stories have been enhanced through imploring the STEM Methodology and include STEM concepts that are incorporated in the story lines. An example would be the classic story of The Three Little Pigs, which has been infused with civil engineering in a fun and engaging way!
SMILE Camps
PROJECT RUNWAY (The Engineering of Fashion) 4-14yrs old
As you know in fashion, you’re either in or you’re out. Young fashion engineers will get the chance to create their own fashion line. They will build their own models using utility dough. They will dress it up with accessories and clothes made out of household materials, as well as natural materials. Planning for production and quality control will be very critical to these fashion engineers. A runway has to built for each team, too! And finally, fashion engineers get to celebrate the success of their fashion show with poppers during the curtain call!
SWEETS FOR MY SWEETS (The Engineering of Food) 4-14yrs old
This camp caters to those who have sweet tooth and more! Young engineers will be involved in all steps of getting food from a farm to your table. They will help figure out how to make cookies, how to package them, and how to deliver these goodies to the bakeries and for take home. During this camp, young engineers will form a team to work as a sweets company,  making tasty treats like as they compete against other teams. They will engineer the best solutions possible each day to beat their opponent companies to earn extra sweets for being the winning company of the day. At the end of the week, the best sweets company will be awarded the Engineering for Kids Baker’s Choice Award, and students will be able to take home the sweets they earned during the week.
Space Race (Smile Robotics) 7-14yrs old
Students will race against time in an unknown planet to complete their science missions before getting back home to Earth. As they finish their challenges they have to hurry to get back to their rocket before they lose energy from the Sun. They will have to collect the sensors scattered across the planet that are needed to locate their rocket. They will have to achieve their tasks in the limited time that their equipment will allow.
Challenge Island
 CHALLENGE ISLAND ICY PARTY (FROZEN) CAMP
You’ll have a sleighful of fun at Challenge Island’s all new ICY PARTY CAMP! Our Frozen-inspired challenges will include designing and decking out a tribal Ice Palace (where you and your friends can chillax), creating a wild reindeer-ride down a snowy mountain, and would you, by any chance, want to build a snowman?! Our ICY Party is sure to fill fast so don’t LET IT GO too long!
CHALLENGE ISLAND
ICKY ME MINI PARTY CAMP
(aka Despicable Me Minions Camp)
If you go bananas over little yellow creatures wearing goggles, Challenge Island’s MINION PARTY CAMP is the place for you! Our movie inspired STEM challenges will include building a lab, making rocket launchers and jelly blasters, and designing ways to keep the minions safe on their missions. This fantastic camp promises to make you very HAPPY this summer!
