What you need to know about City vs Beach UV Exposure

At a time when we face an abundance of choices in how, when, and why we use products, so have sunscreen products slowly evolved from being solely used at the beach during summertime to a daily skin care staple. The message is clear: not only is it important to prevent sunburn, it is equally important to prevent rapid skin aging and deeper cellular damage.
Daylong Gel SPF 50+
Daylong, a dermatological suncare brand from the makers of Cetaphil, is the first to explicitly advocate daily sunscreen application. In its recent efforts to support its cause, Daylong conducted a UV-exposure study to investigate whether the outdoor sun at the beach shows the same level of strength in the city – even when indoors.
Together with five Filipina urbanites – Jaymie Pizarro, Jackie Go, Marj Sia, Janeena Chan, and Marie Lozano – Daylong used sun sensors to track daily UV exposures in Metro Manila for a week. From day to night, their daily activities were recorded, even when indoors.
The study showed that in Metro Manila, the daily UV Index recorded reaches up to 10 from 12nn to 1pm, which places a Very High risk from unprotected sun exposure. Comparing the citys UV index to Caticlan (Boracay) and El Nido (Palawan), and data showed both summer destinations also reach UV Index 10 during the same hours.
Daylong Spray Lotion SPF 30
Daylong also found out that despite staying indoors, the women registered UV readings. Whether clear or cloudy weather, UV solar radiation remains strong, and it can penetrate windows. Indoor light sources, even at night, have also been revealed to contribute to UV exposure.
Daylong used the World Health Organization UV Index ranging from 1 to 11, with 11 indicating ‘Extreme’UV exposure.
We understand that unprotected sun exposure, indoors or outdoors, causes skin damage down to the cellular level. And this means premature skin aging, DNA damage and worse, skin cancer. It’s not just about sunburn” says Jon Lee, Daylong Brand Manager. “Daylong is a dermatological suncare brand that can help prevent all these because it is clinically proven to protect all the way to the skin’s DNA and cellular level. This is why we began the advocacy of daily sunscreen protection – to ensure that everyone’s skin stays healthy, whether they are in the city or at the beach.”
Daylong’s daily sunscreen protection advocacy can be viewed online at www.Daylong.ph, and on Daylong Philippines’ social media pages: DaylongPH on Facebook and @DaylongPH on Twitter and Instagram.

Toddler's Top 5 Today!

1 - Earth-shattering tantrums? Check! This little human being also known as the toddler knows how to do it, and how to do it right. I always assess the situation first before deciding whether to succumb or not. It also depends on what is his agenda. You see, it's his way to assert his will - to make you do what he wants. Tantrums also occur when he is frustrated on something or angry when things didn't go on his way. I remember hearing him wail from the second floor, I run up our room and saw him crying very loudly because he is cleaning the bed and he can't put the pillow on stack. Oh so cute!
With Kuya Yuan Yoj at Paradizoo
2 - All about me. Clyde wants all of our attention. He tries to but in when we're having an adult conversation. He mimics us when we're on the phone. He sometimes don't want to share too. Sometimes, because there are times when he gives everyone what he is having, thank goodness. I know it is natural for toddlers to have that selfish streak, but I know that he is growing out of it. Hurray!
He is a loader or a backhoe depending on how he moves his hands to put the sand inside his dump truck.
3 - A basket full of toys, or two. Clyde now has a variety of toys. And like I said on my last TT5T, I don't splurge on toys but still, the toys are coming in. With different colors, shapes and textures, these toys help baby make his world of make-believe more magical, which could mean that his dump truck could also serve as a cauldron where he could cook his ABC's and shape with his plastic spoon as a spatula. ;) His fist is a drinking cup and my sunglass case his phone. This stage of development is a good start to encourage his imaginary play that will make him more ideal - think ideal - in his adulthood. Way to go, kiddo!
4 - In the first 6 months of his life, I'm his favorite person. Thanks to my decision to exclusively breastfeed him. It was fun. But now that he is self-weaning, guess what? His favorite person aside from his all-time favorite lolo, is his dad. After waking up, his first question was, where is daddy? At work, I'd say. And then he'll say, but I want him home, let's call him. And he will. He jumps up and down, and clap his hands when his dad finally walks through the door after a long day work. He even hugs him tight in spite of sweat and hot and even ask for him to saklot - iloco term for carrying him. Daddy time is very much different from his mommy time. Daddy is more lenient, risky, more physical and it seems like he is a just a big kid playing too than strict no-no mommy. I read somewhere that fathers are equally important in raising children especially on their mental development. Let's encourage dads to have more quality time with kids no matter how busy or tired they are.
5 - motor skill is simply an action that involves your baby using his muscles. Gross motor skills are larger movements your baby makes with his arms, legs, feet, or his entire body. So crawling, running, and jumping are gross motor skills. Fine motor skills are smaller actions. (From Google) All the motor skills which includes walking, running, crawling, jumping, hopping and climbing, especially jumping and running is what he was into when not focused on watching Youtube, Baby TV or Disney Junior. He is now more independent in riding his cart as his dad would call the motorbike scooter, balancing, throwing, sliding climbing and kicking. I let him play and run as these are opportunities to exercise his muscles, but only on safe grounds - like the grassy parts of BGC where he could stumble and still rise with just mud and dirt on his knees, skipping scrapes from concrete floors or worse, bulging lump on his forehead.
Toddlerhood with its abundance of curiosity and the desire to explore is the perfect time to encourage creativity.
I intend to end this post with this super noob collage that I made awhile back.
We're so excited for baby Bambam. <3

Toddler's Top 5 Today

A family friend once gave Clyde a monster truck toy. It was very well used to the point that the chassis was detached to its body case yet he still plays with it. Twice already that we fix it that even the glue gun can no longer do the justice. He still plays with it. I have to say, that toy is very well-loved. The fewer their toys, the more they'll give appreciation to it.
image
Although, I really am convinced that we are not obliged to buy our kids expensive toys, especially when we don't have the budget; I also learned that quality time is better than quantity of toys. Don't tell me I'm a killjoy mom. Clyde has lots of toys - gifts and hands-me-down from relatives and as mentioned earlier from friends. But, most of the time, Clyde was more than happy to play with me - my walking fingers and talking hands - than his not-so-long-ago bought toys. He even is giving more importance to my art.
image
Two of his favorite things: the all-time favorite, family portraits and his recent addiction in everything mechanical, elevators. Can you spot baby number 2?

At the dawn of his three years, I'm proud to say that he is not-so-secretly loving household chores! I myself loves to do the dishes. He cooks, I scrub is the current situation in our house. The two years old sweeps the floor. And just recently, he helped me wash the dishes. He scrub the plates and cups while I do the second scrubbing -just to be sure- and rinsing. He scrubbed away while explaining to me how the bubbles (suds) will wash away the germs and make our chinas clean so that we could eat again using these bacteria-free utensils. Yup, I have a professor in the making. Involving him this early on household chores is a step forward to a more fluid distribution of work in the future!
image
Surprisingly, there are a lot of simple tasks toddlers can do. Get things from here to there. Fold clothes. Separate the spoons from forks. Wipe the table. Sweep the floor. Close the door. Etcetera. It will give them confidence that they can do things, it will assure them that we trust them; and as we expand and increase the complexity of the tasks, they will grow as helpers in the house, not spoiled masters that whims on the littlest things. Maybe, I'll be spoilt on waking up with breakfast ready, complete with freshly brewed coffee. Ahh, I could dream, can't I?
image
And giving them responsibilities is a win-win-win situation. Who needs a maid when you can't afford one and have kids that love household chores?
And if you can, maybe you could use the salary fund as reward fund aka quality family time together -shopping maybe, out-of-town, movie dates perhaps? Besides, it will benefit them in their adult years. Smart and practical.
Creativity is defined as the invention of any new thing. This can be a new solution, artwork, way of thinking and even a new way of playing with an old toy or ordinary objects. Encouraging creativity in toddlers can help them to cope with the demands of a rapidly changing world and prepare them to adapt in a variety of settings as they progress through childhood.
Kids don't need to paint, sculpt nor compose to be called creative. I'm amazed at how my two-year old shows his creativeness. It's his mindset to produce art.
  • He gets a paper bag; put everything inside the cabinets in it and called it shopping.
  • He put all the clothes he could get into a pile. He is creating a mountain.
  • The freshly pressed clothes was tumbled down. I asked him why he did it. It's the London bridge falling down.
  • He imagined himself as the elevator. So no airplane spoons for him. I need to press his nose and wait for the elevator to arrive and open before giving him his spoonful. After swallowing, he will explain that the food will go down his stomach, ride the rollercoaster of his intestines and come out as kaka (poop). Professor indeed.
  • I let him play hide and seek on a blank corner of our room. He thinks he's inside an elevator.
  • He put alphabet letters and shapes on his dump truck and mix it with a big spoon. He is cooking.
#throwback
And many more...
Toddlerhood is the time to explore new things, this is the peaked height of their curiosity. Let's let them. Just make sure they are supervised.
