First of all, I wish everyone a safe and warm place to stay. In this time of trouble, of flooding without storm, of raining without stop, helping others became voluntarily. I saw posts on social networking sites advertising donation acceptance of different NGO groups and other private companies.
Voluntary donations in kind and in cash are very much welcomed. But as the title indicates, the concern of this post is about the Formula Milk given as a donation. I want to share to you moms what I've read on one of my most followed mommy blog: The Chronicles of a Nursing Mom (COANM).
After reading her two recent blogpost regarding the matter. My say is NO to donating Formula Milk and YES to BREASTMILK DONATIONS.
If you wanna know why, here are COANM articles you have to read.
See? If you really wanna help the evacuees and the infants, say no to formula milk unless you know the water available is safe and there is no breastmilk AT ALL. (If you read the entire post, you'll now the meaning of AT ALL)
On the positive notes, I wanna share to you my favorite photo from Mr. Paul Quiambao's Photography: Finding Beauty in Disaster.
It's all about perspective.
It's weather is gloomy already, why don't you give a shiny smile for a change!
Be calm and stay alert. That's one key to survival.
This is a very good cause I deem which will benefit the infants. When calamities arise, the Filipinos spirit of bayanihan is always alive... and I'm proud to be a Pinoy!
ReplyDeleteI agree, it's a good cause indeed. I failed to breastfeed my daughters. I'm a working mom before and my time away from my children is very long. I'm in sales as well, so pumping is not possible too. I hope they'll continue with this project. It will really be a good help for babies. Visiting from CommEx Sept11.
ReplyDeleteVery good cause indeed. Way to go Gerilen. Like Farida here. I'm also very proud to be a Pinoy. :)
ReplyDeleteI advocate breastfeeding...
ReplyDeletebut when disaster ensue and if there is no alternative i would support donation of infant formulas
You got a point there about the formula milk. Aside from the milk, safe drinking water is needed so better to donate breastmilk.
ReplyDelete-daddy allan (visit from BCB)
I agree with breastmilk donation, it is more safe and nutritious.
ReplyDeleteTuwing malalaman ko na umuulan sa NCR ng malakas at dito sa Bohol ay beach-weather, feeling ko ang layo layo ko na sa Manila :(
I think the law (Milk Code) does not allow milk donations.
ReplyDeleteMy prayers with your nation and your people during this time...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo. No to formula milk donations, yes to breast milk donation drives! Of course, if there really are no donations, then formula donations must come with clean potable water donations as well as sterilized bottles. Hard to guarantee that. Perhaps there should be infant stations at all evacuation areas to ensure that the milk that will be given to the kids are clean and won't make them sick.
ReplyDeleteTruly, at the worst times, you see the goodwill of people coming out...like rays of light amidst a dark surrounding.
ReplyDeleteIf I have one regret about being a mom, it is that I don't have much time to breastfed my son. If I had only known these breastfeeding advocates then I will have much knowledge about breastfeeding and how to do it right. I promise to myself that I will fully breastfeed my next baby. I am just thankful that even my son was just breastfed for 3 months, he grow up healthy. Oh, I am against formula milk donations too. Because you are right, in times of calamity there is no safe water around so the babies' health will be more at risk.
ReplyDeleteif only i have milk i'll donate. haha
ReplyDeletebtw, followed you via GFC, i hope you follow back.. Thanks!
I too support breastmilk donation if it is possible. Certainly more hygienic for the baby .
ReplyDeleteWe don't donate formula milk as well though you can't really blame others for donating them as only a few moms can actually donate breastmilk. They have only good intentions in mind. Still it's great that COANM wants to educate people about the dangers of doing so.
ReplyDeleteSeems like a good cause, thanks for sharing this! As much as I want to vote for Breast Milk (with all its glorious nutritional advantage), it's not really readily available compare to formula milk. Plus, it spoils too easily don't you think?
ReplyDeleteStill KUDOS to Pinoy's bayanihan!
It would really be nice to donate breastmilk. Too bad I'm no longer lactating.
ReplyDeleteYes indeed a very good cause. Whenever there are calamities relief goods are always for adults but seldom for children and infants.
ReplyDeleteAt first I was wondering what's wrong with formula milk but then COANM is right, that is if there really is no safe drinking water available. Breastmilk spoils easily. I wonder how they can manage to preserve them when calamity strikes.
ReplyDeleteAs a mother I agree with donating breast milk but I wonder how they can preserve the breast milk.
ReplyDeleteI'm not yet a mom who breastfeed but reading this blog post I say YES to breast-milk donation too.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you! Breast milks are better for kids than formula milks.
ReplyDeleteOh goodness, your photo is amazing... really perfect.
ReplyDeleteBreastmilk is really best. However, I hope they are able to store breastmilk properly otherwise it will go to waste.
ReplyDeleteNot only for those that were victims of calamity but also those moms that are prevented of breast feeding their babies because of medical conditions. I had watched a documentary, and I felt sorry for these mothers.
ReplyDeleteI'm all for breastfeeding. I have breastfeed my four kids. But if it's meant to be donated to calamity stricken areas, wouldn't it spoil easily? SO I think formula milk would also be a big help. :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat call and great cause. Hope many will follow this kind of advocacy.
