Leaky Breasts During Pregnancy

I'm 25 weeks pregnant 6 months going 7, nearing my third trimester, when I notice something wet!

My breasts are leaking! Especially the right side! I was not really that paranoid about it but when it does happen, mostly in the afternoon until early at night, but I find it uncomfortable. Seeing wet spots on my shirt isn’t cute! I felt the dampness and when I touch my shirt with my fingers, I can squeeze the wetness out of it! It doesn’t smell and looks colorless but when it dried out, it looks yellowish, and my boobies are tingling and itchy!

I ask my trusty OB about it and she explained that my “pregnant goddess body” (hehe) is testing and making sure that all systems are ready to go, including leakage of Colostrum during pregnancy. Yes, the fluid that’s leaking in my breast are the precious Colostrum which is a precursor to the breast milk. Leaking may also occur during breast massage or sexual arousal.

Colostrum is the first supply of milk of newborns on their first few days of life. It contains less fat, less sugar and more protein than mature breast milk that is easier for their little tummy to digest. It makes me think, “awww.. what a waste! It’s full of antibodies!” but deep inside I’m happy to know that my body is functioning well for my little bean. Hihihi

If you are not yet experiencing this and is curious about it, try to gently squeeze your areola to express a drop or two. If none comes out, don’t fret, it will when the time is right, and that’s when the little baby’s mouth is searching for milk! hehe

Well, as for moms-to-be like me, who leaks, I felt more comfortable in wearing nursing pads sometimes inside my bra when I’m out and about. But I try to relax, by clipping the back of my bra one strap looser when I’m just home knowing it’ll make the milk-process in my insides easier. And I try to wear cotton shirts for easier spotting and absorption of leak.
